Loretta Anne Schnabel Mohr, age 82, completed her journey on earth on August 8, 2012. She was surrounded by her children, their spouses, and her grand-daughter.
Loretta was born the youngest of 3 children to George and Matilda Schnabel in Queens, NY on November 2, 1929. Her father and mother died when she was a young girl. Along with her brother, Bernie, and sister, Teresa, she was raised by their maternal Aunt and her husband, Emma and Ed Futterer.
She graduated from Mepham High School in 1947 and went to work in New York City at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She continued to work there until she began her family and then was a stay at home mom until her three children were well along in school.
On October 12, 1957 she married Ronald A. Mohr. After starting a family they bought a house and settled in Sayville, NY where they raised their 3 children; John, Lori, and Lynn.
After retirement Lor and Ron moved to Carthage, NC and then Aberdeen, NC where she was very active at St. Anthony's of Padua Church in Southern Pines. She and her husband "adopted" a class of special needs children and provided gifts and parties for them monthly for many years.
She was known as a great baker. Growing up her children always had fresh cookies, cakes, or pies for dessert. She was the mother of choice for baking cupcakes for school parties. Christmas was always very special because she usually made 15 or so different types of cookies. Snickerdoodles were always one of her favorites. There are still many of her recipes being passed around among family and friends.
She was a true home maker in every sense. In fact she spent many evenings sewing, crafting, crocheting, and making special gifts.
She always looked for ways to help others, often sacrificing herself in many ways.
For a period of time while in Sayville she sat on the Board of Directors for a group home for emotionally disturbed children in her neighborhood. And then after she moved to NC she was on the Board of a Safe House for Abused women and children.
She also served with the Board of Elections in Suffolk County, NY.
While living in Carthage, NC she often attended Town Board Meetings and volunteered to help during Town Events such as the Annual Buggy Festival.
For many years, the family camped at campgrounds around Long Island, New York State, and along the east coast. The family belonged to the NCHA Brentwood Chapter known as the Lightning Bugs. Loretta and her husband were also members of the Grumman Camping Club. In later years, during retirement, they would travel with their trailer to visit family back in NY and in VA, as well as take extended camping vacations.
Lor and Ron moved to Charlottesville, VA in early 2012; because she wanted to be closer to her family. She underwent major back surgery in June and was on the road to recovery when a relapse occurred and she was unable to recover this time.
The Family would like to Thank Trinity Mission Nursing Home, specifically Shelly who was her evening nurse, for the kind and loving care provided to Loretta, and special thanks to Dr. Jonathan Evans for his outstanding love and support to Loretta and her family.
