Charles Dayton Riddle, Jr., MD

Charles Dayton Riddle, Jr., M.D., was born on September 6, 1931, in Greenville, South Carolina, and passed away on January 17, 2013, at Greenville Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He is survived by Anne, his wife of fifty-six years. He was the son of Charles Dayton Riddle and Margaret Knight Riddle and was a lifelong member of First Baptist Greenville, where he served as a past Chairman of the Diaconate.

Dr. Riddle graduated summa cum laude from Furman University in 1953 and received the Hales Scholarship Cup and the Bradshaw-Feaster General Excellence Award while a student there. He was the Class of 1957 first honor graduate from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as a junior. Dr. Riddle completed his residency and teaching fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina between 1957 and 1962, and subsequently completed military service as a team physician for the athletic teams at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Dr. Riddle engaged in private practice at Piedmont Orthopaedic Clinic from 1964 to 1988. During his professional career, he also served as Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering at Clemson University, Interim Dean of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Interim Vice President for Academic Services at Greenville Memorial Hospital and Assistant Chief of Staff at the Shriners Hospital for Children – Greenville.

In 1979, Dr. Riddle was named Academic Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Greenville Hospital System and remained Chairman or Chairman Emeritus until his death.

Dr. Riddle was a member of many professional societies, from local organizations, such as the Greenville County Medical Society to national organizations, such as the American Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he served as treasurer from 1985 to 1988. He served as a board examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and was a past president of the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association, a member of the South Carolina State Board of Medical Examiners, a member of the House of Delegates for the South Carolina Medical Association, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Greenwood Genetics Center.

Dr. Riddle was honored with the 1987 Algernon Sidney Sullivan Award from Furman University, which recognizes a graduate's "influence for good, excellence in maintaining high ideals of living, and genuine and disinterested service to others" and the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Medical University of South Carolina, which recognizes outstanding service to the profession of medicine and to society. He was also honored by the dedication of the Frank H. Stelling and C. Dayton Riddle Orthopaedic Education and Research Laboratory at the Clemson University Biomedical and Bioengineering Translation Research Center in 2010.

Dr. Riddle's life of service will be best remembered by his family, the patients he healed, and the physicians he taught. He showed his school pride by serving as a long-time member of the sports medicine team for Furman University athletics and spent some of his most enjoyable times on the sidelines with Furman's student athletes and coaches.

In addition to his wife, Anne, he is survived by his children, Charles Dayton Riddle, III and his wife, Leslie, of Columbia, Samuel Knight "Bo" Riddle, of Atlanta, Georgia, Margaret Riddle "Meg" Scoopmire and her husband, Sean, of Greenville, and son-in-law, Robert H. Bevis, of Lakeland, Florida. He was predeceased by his daughter, Carol Anne Riddle Bevis. Dr. Riddle is also survived by three grandsons, Charles Dayton Riddle, IV, Coleman Kirkland Riddle, and Davis Cannon Riddle, of Columbia, and his sister, Margaret Gordon of Mobile, Alabama.

Memorials may be made to the C. Dayton Riddle, Jr. Endowed Scholarship at Furman University (c/o Development Office, Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville South Carolina 29613) or to a charity of one's choice.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at First Baptist Greenville at 3:00pm, officiated by Reverend Kyle Matthews. A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at The Mackey Mortuary from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
