Gary Alan Schraibman
COLUMBIA - Memorial service for Gary Alan Schraibman, 49, will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia SC 29204. A private burial will be held prior to the memorial service. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in Thompson Hall at the church.
Pallbearers will be Scott Sawyer, Wayne Weiss, Bob Wright, El Thompson, Robert Adams, Jack Shuler, Hagood Tighe, George Gore, Brad Tiller, Billy Wells, Joey McCue, Stephen Johnson and Dennis Way. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Gary's Thursday Men's Bible Study: Bill Higgins, Jack Somebody Wolfe, Bill Short, Joe Berry, Bill Metzger, Butch Jones, Bill Deloache, Chris Goodall, Richard Clayton, Chris Twitty, Michael Schraibman and Bill Jones. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Gary died Saturday, August 11, 2012. Born on February 9, 1963 in Columbia, he was a son of Arnold Harris Schraibman and Jane Elizabeth Martin Smith. Gary attended Hammond High School and the University of South Carolina where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He worked at IBM and Smith Barney before becoming a vice president of Stephens, Inc. Gary served as Clerk of Session at Eastminster Presbyterian Church and also served as a deacon and elder. He was a board member of Jubilee Academy and was very active in his Thursday Men's Bible Study.
Gary was a loving husband and father. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved being outdoors – hunting, fishing, and being on his boat. He was a Christian who led his life with a purpose and passion that was contagious. He was a fisher of men.
Surviving are his wife, Lou Davenport Schraibman; children, Olivia, George, and Will Schraibman; grandmother, Frances Clarke Martin; siblings, Michael Schraibman and his wife, Aimee, Marshall Schraibman, Cathy Schraibman, Kathryn Moorer, Frank and Judy Smith III; nieces and nephews, Nan Davenport, Michael, Caroline, and Grace Schraibman, Mallie, Thomas, and Robert McKenzie, Sumner and Carter Moorer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ty and Hiller Davenport, Sally and Rob McKenzie, and Ami and James Chastain.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gary Schraibman Memorial Foundation, c/o Central Carolina Community Foundation, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 213, Columbia SC 29204. The purpose of this foundation will be to further the Kingdom of God. Initial donations to the Gary Schraibman Memorial Foundation will go to Jubilee Academy; a cause in which Gary was actively and passionately involved. Jubilee Academy is a privately funded school in Columbia that educates and nurtures underprivileged children in a Christian environment.
